Israel’s security cabinet on Tuesday approved a ceasefire deal with Iran-backed Hezbollah, paving the way to end the conflict in Lebanon, news agency Reuters said, citing sources.
The ceasefire deal between Israel and Hezbollah is expected to halt the war that has killed almost 3,800 people in Lebanon over the last year and left about 16,000 others wounded.
News agency Reuters said, citing four senior Lebanese sources, that US President Joe Biden and French President Emmanuel Macron are likely to announce the ceasefire deal after the Israeli security cabinet approval.
However, there was no indication that a truce in Lebanon would hasten a ceasefire and hostage-release deal in Gaza, where Israel is battling with Hamas.
The Lebanon ceasefire agreement requires Israeli troops to withdraw from south Lebanon and Lebanon’s army to deploy in the region, news agency Reuters said, citing officials. Hezbollah would end its armed presence along the border south of the Litani River, it added.
Lebanese Foreign Minister Abdallah Bou Habib said the Lebanese army would be ready to have at least 5,000 troops deployed in southern Lebanon as Israeli troops withdraw, and that the United States could play a role in rebuilding infrastructure destroyed by Israeli strikes.
Earlier on Tuesday, Israel continued its military campaign in Lebanon with strikes targeting densely-populated southern suburbs in Beirut and other parts of Lebanon.
The Israeli military said one barrage of strikes had hit 20 targets in the city in just 120 seconds, killing at least seven people and injuring 37, according to Lebanon’s health ministry.
Notably, the Middle East has been witnessing a tumultuous security situation for nearly one year after Hamas launched an unprecedented attack on Israel, killing about 1,200 people and taking hostage over 200 others. The attack triggered a war in several parts of the Middle East, which has killed over 43,000 people.
